The history of California T4 T5 T6

The history of California began in 1988 with a special camper model made on the basis of T3 van. Towards the end of summer, this first version of the vehicle is presented at the Essen caravan show. It was the year in which Whitney Houston accompanied the globetrotter with his hit “One Moment in Time” and Tom Cruise starred next to Dustin Hoffman in “Rain Man”. In Germany Helmut Kohl was a chancellor and in the United States the president was Ronald Reagan.

Customers could order this first model in two colors: “Pastel White” or “Marsala Red”. The designers who made the interiors showed great skills; In fact, they created a well recognizable style, thanks to the use of white and gray colors and the creation of a kitchen arranged optimally. The price of the vehicle was 39,900 German brands. The advantageous price, the intelligent characteristics and the indestructible engineering of the bullies immediately made it a best seller, with 5,000 units sold already in the first year of life. From then on, California, which initially had to be only a special edition, has been transformed into a product part of the range, thus becoming increasingly popular; In just three years he has conquered 22,000 camper lovers.

The transition from T3 to T4 took place in August 1990. And it was similar to a technological revolution. After four decades of rear -wheel drive with four -cylinder boxer engines, Volkswagen specialists overturned things: they moved the engine in front and from there he led the front axle. This has changed everything: design, suspension, engines and internal spaces. Especially in the back there was now much more space, a feature that made the California T4 unique than any other camper of that time. The slogan of the launch campaign was: “Hotel California. Quiet location, comfortable furniture, guaranteed panoramic view”, developed as a game on the Eagles song. As “California” Hotel California T4 was a success.

It is true that California have never become vehicles for normal daily use. But instead they turned into the classics of their period
